Game Don't Starve ini menantang para player untuk bertahan hidup di lingkungan alam liar yang misterius selama mereka bisa. Ketika karakter yang player mainkan mati, anda diberi EXP dari jumlah hari anda bertahan hidup. EXP berguna untuk meng-unlock karakter yg lain. Meski matinya karakter adalah permanen dan dunia yang dijelajah player akan hilang ketika permainan berakhir, tapi berbagai cara untuk membangkitkan karakter dari kematian dapat ditemukan atau dibuat untuk mencegah berakhirnya game.
